Château Lanessan
AOC Haut-Médoc Red
In 1793, this prestigious cru came into the possession of the Delbos family. In 1855, Château Lanessan was unhesitatingly selected for the Paris Universal Exhibition; all it had to do was to undergo the tasting competition. Unfortunately, at the last moment Louis Delbos decided not to send the samples being asked of him. His view was that his wine already enjoyed an excellent reputation and that one more classification would not enhance it further. He could not have guessed that this minor classification for the purposes of an exhibition would subsequently become the famous and formidable Bordeaux Classification of 1855! In 1878, major renovation work was undertaken and the current château was built in a neo-Tudor style typical of the period. Today, the wines of Château Lanessan still figure among the best in the appellation. The Bouteillers, who are descendents of the Delbos, still own the estate and strive to develop their wines.
